Customers urged to service boilers

Individuals using home heating oil for their heating have been advised to ensure they have their boilers and heating systems serviced ahead of the cooler months.

Industry association Oftec has urged customers to have units serviced to ensure that carbon monoxide poisoning is not a risk, a report says.

Manager of the organisation in Northern Ireland David Blevings argued that it is "common sense" for people to have their heating systems checked each year.

He added that all fossil fuelled appliances produce carbon monoxide, but if they are installed properly there should be no risk to human health.

"Consumers tend to forget about their boilers until the cold weather kicks in during autumn, but Oftec felt a strong message about carbon monoxide safety is needed," he told industry news provider Oil Fired Up.

The organisation recommended that people always use qualified technicians when having installations serviced so as to reduce the risk of fault.
