Calls have been made for a rise in the fuel allowance given to elderly people to help cover their fuel costs.

Michael Noonan, TD for Limerick, said that if new carbon tax is introduced, as the government seem committed to do, then there will be a need to take action to help the elderly, the Limerick Leader claims.

"Unless they increase the fuel allowance for the elderly at the same time to absorb the increased costs, this winter will be a very bleak one for older people," the paper claims he said.

The deputy added that winter heating bills are a struggle for older people and that Ireland already had one of the highest winter mortality rates in Europe.

A carbon tax would not only affect users of heating oil - any fuels where carbon is produced as a waste product would be affected.

Heating oil futures on the key trading platform the New York Mercantile Exchange currently stand at around $2.07 per gallon.
